The Battle of Port Republic (9 June 1862) was a battle of the American Civil War fought between Union general Erastus B. Tyler's 3,500-strong brigade and Confederate general Stonewall Jackson's 6,000-strong army. Jackson planned a two-pronged attack against Union forces in the Shenandoah Valley, with Isaac R. Trimble assaulting the Union at Cross Keys as Jackson and Charles S. Winder assaulted Tyler's brigade at Port Republic. Winder's Stonewall Brigade suffered heavy casualties while assaulting the Union right and center, and Tyler organized an effective counterattack that drove the Confederates back. However, Richard S. Ewell arrived with reinforcements and burnt the North Fork Bridge, cutting off the Union retreat. Richard Taylor's Louisiana Tigers proceeded to outflank the Union and capture the Lewistown Coaling hill, and the Union briefly recaptured the Coaling before being forced to retreat once more. William B. Taliaferro's fresh Confederate brigade arrived and took several hundred Union prisoners, and the Union army was forced to retreat along the Luray Road. John C. Fremont's other Union army also decided to withdraw north, clearing Union forces from the Shenandoah Valley.
