The Battle of Pokrovskoe was fought between the German Wehrmacht and the Soviet Red Army from November to December 1941 as part of the wider Battle of Moscow.
During the German push on Moscow, elements of the Heer's 110th Infantry Division pushed into the small city of Pokrovskoe, which was defended by the 174th Rifle Division. The German advance was supported by armor, but German tanks suffered heavy losses at the hands of Soviet soldiers who took up positions inside tall buildings along the main roads and fired anti-tank ammunition. German soldiers were forced to engage in fierce street fighting before clearing out these buildings floor by floor, with three key buildings changing hands several times. Ultimately, the Germans were able to hold their captured territory against Soviet counterattacks.
In December 1941, Pokrovskoe was once again embattled as the Red Army launched a counterattack against the German invaders outside Moscow. This time, the Red Army was able to clear the city of German soldiers after ferocious combat similar to the first battle.
