The Battle of Overloon occurred from 30 September to 18 October 1944 when the Allied Powers attacked the salient between Eindhoven and Nijmegen in the southern Netherlands. A British Army and a US Army division took part in the operation, and the American assault on Overloon led to the Allies suffering heavy losses. The British proceeded to assault the town with tanks, and the British and German armored formations engaged each other in the largest tank battle on Dutch soil. The Allied offensive cost both sides heavy losses, but the Allies destroyed the German bridgehead west of the Maas (Meuse) river.
