The Battle of Nuremberg occurred from 16 to 20 April 1945 when the US 7th Army fought against the German Heer and the Russian Liberation Army for control of the city of Nuremberg in the southern German region of Bavaria. The US Army troops faced two German divisions, two regiments, and contingents of Russian Liberation Army troops and Volkssturm volunteers. The American artillery shelled the old city of Nuremberg, and many city buildings were destroyed during the heavy fighting between the Germans and Americans, including the historic castle. The Gauleiter of Franconia, Karl Holz, was killed when American troops stormed the city's bunker, and the German forces were ordered to stand down at 11:00 AM on 20 April 1945.
