The Battle of Novocerkassk was a Axis counteroffensive launched on 3 February 1943 with the goal of retaking parts of western Russia from the Soviet Union during World War II. 49,000 German and Romanian troops from the German LVII Armeekorps, the Romanian 6th Corps, and the Romanian 4th Corps took part in the offensive against the Soviet 51st Army, one of the first German counterattacks attempted during the fresh Soviet offensive of early 1943. The Axis made good progress at first, but their offensive would grind to a bloody halt as they faced stalemate with the Soviets, and the attack was called off on 15 February 1943 as Axis losses mounted.
