The Battle of Ninh Phu was a battle fought between the North Vietnamese PAVN and the South Vietnamese ARVN in 1974, during the Vietnam War.
The 324th Division of the North Vietnamese Army attacked the South Vietnamese town of Ninh Phu amid the offensives of 1974, facing a detachment of 1st ARVN Division troops in the town. The South Vietnamese troops, many of whom were equipped with vintage World War II weapons such as M1 Garand rifles and Thompson submachine guns, struggled to hold the bridgeheads across which the PAVN attacked. While the South Vietnamese inflicted significant losses on the PAVN attackers, they were ultimately forced to retreat into Ninh Phu. Fierce fighting broke out in the marketplace and on the streets of town, and South Vietnamese artilley fire failed to turn the tide of battle. The PAVN was able to push the ARVN back to their final line of defense, the local school, where the ARVN soldiers took shelter in the building and fired at the PAVN troops through the windows. The North Vietnamese advanced into the open from alleyways, and they were caught in kill zones by the ARVN gunners, who inflicted heavy losses. The ARVN held out at the school until the PAVN withdrew, having expended three-quarters of their attack force in the failed attempt to take Ninh Phu.
