The Battle of New Volendam was fought in 1655 between the colonial powers of Courland and the United Provinces in the Caribbean. Following their destruction of the French colony of New Languedoc, the German colonists from New Courland, led by Nikolaus Schromburgk, decided to mount an amphibious invasion of the Dutch colony of New Volendam in the southern Caribbean. The Germans took the Dutch by surprise, and their ships bombarded the settlement as the German soldiers torched the Dutch banks, town center, and other buildings. The Dutch imported ruyter cavalry to help defend the colony, and they also sent in a frigate to attack the German fleet. The frigate destroyed a Courlander caravel, but it was destroyed by the German galleon, and the German landing force destroyed the Dutch settlement and killed many of its inhabitants.
