The Battle of Nebno was a battle of the Ramessid Civil War that was fought between Egyptian armies loyal to Queen Tausret and Prince Ramesses in 1196 BC. Ramesses' general Ahmenet defeated an attack from Tausret's general Webaka just a few miles from the site of the earlier Battle of Tapsytjer, where he had vanquished another army that had taken part in the Battle of Bahig.

History[]

After Pharaoh Seti II and Queen Tausret's three armies suffered heavy losses during their victory over Prince Ramesses' general Nebaendjau at the 1196 BC Battle of Bahig, the royal couple canceled their plans to march north to finish off Ramesses' battered army at Khemenu. Instead, their armies broke off and dispersed on both banks of the Nile, hoping to blunt Ramesses' inevitable counterattack. Ramesses dispatched his general Ahmenet southward from the Nile Delta with his battle-hardened army, intent on defeating Tausret's roving armies and knocking Saww out of the war. He first destroyed Pinhuni's pro-Seti army at the Battle of Tapsytjer, partly avenging the disaster at Bahig; shortly after, Tausret's general Webaka led his army of Nubian and Libyan warriors to attack Ahmenet's army in conjunction with the garrison of nearby Tep-aha, which Tausret's forces had easily occupied in the absence of a defending army. Ahmenet withdrew beyond the range of Tep-aha's garrison, and Webaka chose to pursue, resulting in a battle at a place called Nebno.

In the ensuing battle, Ahmenet attempted to flank Webaka's army, dispatching archers to a rocky hilltop on his right flank to harry Webaka's forces as his main army charged into battle. Webaka's main force was kept engaged until Ahmenet personally led the right flank of his army around the hill, downhill, and into Webaka's rear. Webaka's army was surrounded and destroyed, and he followed up this victory by destroying Namay's remnants in a follow-up battle, crushing Nebaendjau's pro-Seti remnants, and retaking Tep-aha from Ramose's pro-Tausret garrison.
