The Battle of Monte Castello (21-26 June 1944) was one of the actions of the Allied advance up the "boot of Italy", seeing 81,000 United States and South African troops take part in an offensive against 23,000 German troops holding Monte Castello. The Allied forces were able to take Monte Castello after five days of heavy fighting, and the Germans were forced to retreat to the north, forming a new defensive line on the orders of Albrecht Kesselring.
