The Battle of Monceau-lès-Leups was a battle fought on the Western Front of World War I on 30 January 1915 when the French Army launched an offensive against the Imperial German Army in the Aisne department of France. General Louis Franchet d'Esperey's French 5th Army attacked the German defenses on the northern Aisne plateau with the objective of breaking through in the static Aisne sector, involving eight regiments in their assault. The French and Germans fought for control of trenches dug in a forest clearing, and the French rapidly captured the first German trench before pressing on to take a double-trench beyond the frontline. This trench changed hands several times, and the French were even able to briefly advance on the German headquarters trench before being pushed back. This notwithstanding, the French were in control of two additional rows of trenches by the time the battle was over, having suffered 784 losses; the Germans, meanwhile, lost 1,005 men.
