The Battle of Matmata occurred from 1 to 6 February 1943 when 27,000 Allied troops assaulted German and Italian positions in southwestern Tunisia during the drive towards Tunis. The German Afrika Korps and 15th Panzer Division and the Italian 184th Airborne Division Nembo, all of them undermanned due to recent fighting, couldonly muster 11,741 troops to fight the Allies. In the ensuing battle, the Allies achieved a breakthrough with 380 losses, and the Axis force suffered 1,189 losses during the fighting.
