The Battle of Mafia Island occurred in 1695 when the pirate Captain Rija attacked Zanzibari shipping off Mafia Island, resulting in a clash with the feared Joka Kubwa and Kubwa's demise.
Hoping to bolster his ship Masina with new upgrades, Rija returned to East Africa's shores to harvest necessary goods unique to the region. Rija targeted several Ungwana ships as they headed to and from the Swahili Coast's ports, hoping to secure lime and other materials. Along the way, he decided to confront Joka Kubwa, a zealous Ungwanan officer who sought to scour the coast of all outside influence, be it French or pirate. Rija destroyed Kubwa's ship after a brief fight, and the lime recovered from Kubwa's ship was sufficient for Rija to upgrade his ship back in Singapore.
