The Battle of Kunduz occurred from 22 June to 8 August 2021 when the Taliban captured the Kunduz Province capital of Kunduz amid the 2021 Taliban offensive which ended the Afghanistan War. Starting in mid-June 2021, the Taliban "blitzed" Kunduz Province's districts, as the Long War Journal reported, taking Aliabad on 12 June and the districts of Chahar Dara, Dasht-i-Archi, Imam Sahib, Khanabad, and Qala-i-Zal from 19 to 21 June. On 20 June, the Taliban seized the entrances to Kunduz, initiating a siege of the city. On 22 June, the Taliban began to enter Kunduz itself, and, on 8 August, the Taliban launched their final assault on Kunduz. The battle was marked by heavy fighting and mass desertions from the Afghan National Army, with the ANA being confined to Kunduz's military base and airport. The Taliban's Red Group shock troops freed hundreds of Taliban prisoners, including Taliban commanders, and the city fell that same day. On 11 August, the entire 217th Pamir Corps surrendered to the Taliban in Kunduz, having held out for three more days.
