The Battle of Kowel (20-27 June 1944) occurred when Ivan Konev's 1st Ukrainian Front advanced into eastern Poland (now in parts of western Ukraine) and attacked the German fester plaetz of Kowel, defended by 27,000 German troops from the XIII Armeekorps under Friedrich-August Schack. The Germans defended Kowel for a week, and the Soviets eventually overwhelmed the Germans, despite facing determined resistance from the Wehrmacht. On 27 June 1944, the Red Army moved into Kowel after routing the Germans.
