The Battle of Kos Harbor was fought on 3 October 1943 amid the larger Battle of Kos.
Late in the aftrenoon of 3 October, the Germans - having already secured the center of the island with the capture of Mount Dikeos, Mastihari, and Marmari, advanced north from Vokkolia Fort to assault the harbor town of Kos. The 22nd Infantry Division, supported by Luftwaffe dive-bombers, engaged in fierce fighting in the streets of Kos, fighting house-to-house. British warplanes harassed the advancing Germans, who suffered heavy losses as they fought for control of the docks. However, Italian soldiers surrendered in droves as the Germans outflanked them, and the Germans ultimately overcame heavy resistance to secure the town of Kos. This German victory confined the Allies to Kos' airport at Antimachia and the village of Kefalos.
