The Battle of Kilsheelan was fought on 10 October 1642 during the Irish Confederate Wars. The Parliamentarian governor of Munster, Murrough O'Brien, intercepted and defeated a much smaller Irish Confederate irregular force under Seamus Hennessey in County Tipperary.
In October of 1642, Hennessey returned to Munster to once again sack the defenseless Parliamentarian-held village of Killarney, arousing the ire of Governor O'Brien. As Hennessey and his 75-strong party withdrew towards Wexford, O'Brien and his much larger force of 111 troops intercepted the Irish rebels. O'Brien's cavalry rode down the poorly-equipped Irish recruits and butchered them, although Hennessey offered spirited resistance and cut down several Roundheads before he was knocked unconscious. However, Hennessey and a handful of his soldiers evaded capture after wearing down the Roundheads, and they fled to the protection of Waterford, where Hennessey set about rebuilding his army.
