The Battle of Khambhat was a naval battle fought in the Gulf of Khambhat in 1485 between the fleets of the Bahmani Sultanate and the Gujarat Sultanate. The Bahmanis prepared a large fleet for a destructive raid on Gujarat, ultimately aiming to attack Ahmedabad and drive the Turkic Gujaratis from India. The 8-ship Bahmani fleet came across a mere two Gujarati galleons at the mouth of the Narmada River, and the two Gujarati ships sunk one of the Bahmani galleons before withdrawing up the Gulf of Khambat and towards the mouth of the Bhogawo River to protect the Gujarati docks there. The Bahmanis pressed their attack, forcing the Gujaratis to hurriedly get to work on building makeshift galleons to fight off the remaining 7 Bahmani ships. The two original Gujarati ships were destroyed, allowing for the Bahmani ships to destroy a Gujarati fishing boat. However, the ships came under fire from the garrison of the castle on the western shore at Dholera, giving the Gujaratis time to launch two more ships. These ships worked with the castle to destroy the rest of the Bahmani fleet, although the Gujaratis lost another ship before claiming victory. The destruction of the Bahmani fleet led to Sultan Mahmud Begada embarking on the fortification of Ahmedabad with a 6.2-mile-long wall with twelve gates, 189 bastions, and over 6,000 battlements. This fortification was complete by 1487.
