The Battle of Jackson Bay was a naval battle which was fought between the Spanish Navy and the British Royal Navy off the southern coast of Jamaica in 1722 during the Anglo-Spanish War. The battle began when the Spanish man-of-war San Cristobal and the frigates San Juan Bautista and Conquistador, sailing out of the Captaincy General of Santo Domingo, attacked the British brigs HMS Rising Sun and HMS Triumph off Jackson Bay in southern Jamaica. The Spanish immobilized the brig Triumph before their three heavy ships pounded the Rising Sun, which was forced to fend for itself. The pirate captain Edward Kenway, seeking plunder, decided to come to the aid of the British by attacking the Spanish ships. This gave the British time to send in the man o' war HMS Rose (carrying 1,000 reales, 75 wood, 120 cloth, and 35 rum) and the frigates HMS Oak (carrying 75 wood and 135 cloth) and HMS Duke (carrying 45 rum and 98 sugar) to aid their ship. The British showed little gratitude for the pirates' aid, turning their guns on the Jackdaw. As a result, after sinking the Spanish ships, Kenway was forced to battle the British ships, as well as the Spanish. The Spanish frigate San Miguel went on to battle the HMS Rose amid a storm as the Jackdaw watched from a distance, ultimately sweeping in to capture the Rose and its cargo. After the Spanish and British squadrons were destroyed, Kenway decided to sail west to Malcolm Bay to attack and plunder more British and Spanish shipping.
