The Battle of Itampolo occurred in 1695 when the pirate Captain Rija ambushed and destroyed an Kilwan merchant convoy as it sailed past Madagascar.
In 1695, a Kilwan officer decided to risk it all by carving a new trade route past Madagascar, setting sail for the east. Captain Rija, sailing aboard the Anakao, attacked the convoy off Madagascar's southwest coast. In the ensuing action, the pirates took out the Kilwan vessels one by one, salvaging their cargo and destroying the fleet.
