The Battle of Gettysburg (1-4 July 1863) was a major battle of the American Civil War. Often considered to be the turning point of the war in the favor of the United States, the battle lasted four days and caused over 46,000 casualties. It occurred when the Confederate States Army of Northern Virginia under Robert E. Lee invaded Pennsylvania ten months after his first invasion of the north was repelled at the Battle of Antietam, and when some Confederate soldiers searched for shoes in the town of Gettysburg, they fought a skirmish with the Union. Soon, the Army of the Potomac under George G. Meade turned its full attention to the town, and the Confederate and Union armies fought for days. Bitter fights took place on Little Round Top, Devil's Den, the Wheat Field, Peach Orchard, and in Pickett's Charge, and the battle resulted in a Union victory after the final Confederate assault was beaten off. The battle, together with the end of the siege of Vicksburg on 4 July, dealt a major blow to Confederate morale, and Lee did not attempt to invade the north a third time (however, Jubal Early had a short campaign in the Shenandoah Valley in late 1864, also defeated).
