The Battle of Gautier Bay was a naval battle of the Golden Age of Piracy that occurred off the southern coast of Jamaica in 1722 when the pirate ship Jackdaw attacked and destroyed a three-ship British Royal Navy squadron.
Captain Edward Kenway spotted his prey as he sailed out of Kingston harbor, and he adventurously decided to attack, plunder, and sink the British frigate HMS Furious and the brigs HMS Rye and HMS Seahorse, all three of which carried rum, metal, and cloth. In the ensuing battle, Kenway attacked, captured, and scuttled the three ships, but he allowed the crew of one ship to leave in safety in order to prevent a nearby pirate-hunting ship from starting a battle with him. Kenway was tempted to search for other British targets, but he ultimately decided to come to the Royal Navy's aid against the attacking Spanish Navy at the Battle of Calabash Bay.
