The Battle of Garrincreen was fought between the Catholic Irish Confederates and the Presbyterian Scots Covenanters on 23 October 1642 amid the Irish Confederate Wars.
Though his force of irregulars had recently been bested by the Covenanters at the Battle of Swatragh, Seamus Hennessey found an opportunity for revenge when a group of Irish bridge guards led by Alasdair Mac Colla intercepted a Covenanter artillery train outside Kilkenny. Hennessey and his party joined the battle, and the vastly outnumbered Covenanters were overwhelmed and massacred. The Irish stole the Scots' supplies, hamstringing their campaign in Northern Ireland.
