The Battle of Gabes occurred from 10 to 12 February 1943 when the 8,995-strong Moroccan Division of the French Army launched an assault on a force of 25,277 German and Italian troops stationed in Gabes, Tunisia. The Italian 131st Armored Division Centauro, the 1st Mountain Infantry Division Superga, and the 184th Airborne Division Nembo and the German Afrika Korps and 15th Panzer Division attempted to defend Gabes from the French assault, but the French would be reinforced by the US 1st Armored Division, the 4th Indian Infantry Division, and British Army forces. The Axis forces were unable to hold the Allied army back, and the Germans were defeated on 12 February. Shortly after, US tanks and Indian infantry entered Gabes, liberating the region from Axis occupation.
