The Battle of Foucaucourt-en-Santerre was a battle fought on the Western Front of World War I on 14 February 1915. The French general Louis Franchet d'Esperey, commanding the 5th Army, launched an offensive against the Imperial German Army in the Picardy sector after the success of his Aisne offensive at the Battle of Monceau-lès-Leups. Eight French regiments advanced across no man's land to take the German trench atop a hillside, and the Germans and French engaged in intense fighting for control of the German trench, which changed hands five times. The French ultimately captured the trench and held it against spirited German counterattacks, braving artillery strikes and picking off the advancing German soldiers. By the end of the battle, the trench remained in French hands, with the French losing 995 dead and the Germans losing 1,058 dead.
