The Battle of Fayid (late November 1798) was a battle of the Egyptian Campaign of the French Revolutionary Wars that occurred in late November 1798. The 869-strong French army of Louis Desaix marched on the vital city of Suez and encamped at the pastures of Fayid, where they were attacked by an army of 1,002 Mamelukes under Jalaluddin Amin. The Mamelukes recklessly charged the French forces, and the French greeted them with massive volleys of musketry. The Mamelukes were unable to break through the French lines, and a French counterattack swept the Mamelukes from the field. 322 Frenchmen and 931 Mamelukes were lost in the battle, and the French were able to capture Suez shortly after.
