The Battle of Dover Airfield occurred on 12 August 1940 during the Battle of Britain. In response to the approach of German Luftwaffe fighters towards the coast of Devon, the RAF sent the Tiger and Lion Wings of the 43rd Combat Squadron to intercept the Messerschmitt Bf 109 fighters as they flew towards the RAF airbase. The British fighters were able to destroy the German planes after the Germans damaged a facility on the coast, with around 17 German planes being shot down in the air battle. Dover Airfield was protected from German attack at the cost of RAF Flying Officer Henry Woodward, whose plane was shot down during the battle.
