The Battle of Dillingen occurred on 6 February 1945 when the US 7th Army assaulted the town of Dillingen in the Saarland region of western Germany, with the US Army Rangers spearheading an assault by regular US Army troops and armored vehicles. The Rangers secured the town center with little opposition, but the American right flank came into contact with some Wehrmacht forces, leading to a battle between the German and American forces over the town. The Americans succeeded in taking Dillingen rather quickly, and they defended the town and its surroundings from fierce German counterattacks on the flanks. The Germans failed to recover the town, and they wasted some of their few remaining armored vehicles during their attempted recapture of the town. The Germans were eventually forced to withdraw, ceding Dillingen to the Americans.
