The Battle of Chatel-Chéhéry was a battle of World War I which was fought in the Argonne region of eastern France on 25 January 1915. Hoping to break the deadlock in eastern France, General Maurice Sarrail launched an offensive involving the 88th Infantry Regiment, 32nd Infantry Regiment, 337th Infantry Regiment, 294th Infantry Regiment, 210th Infantry Regiment, 113th Infantry Regiment, 69th Infantry Regiment, and the 266th Infantry Regiment, facing four regular Imperial German Army regiments, two pionier battalions, a Landwehr regiment, and a jaeger regiment. The French regiments charged across no man's land and initially succeeded in capturing the Fleury first line from the Germans, but they were met with spirited German counterattacks which drove them from the trenches. The trenches changed hands four times, with the French taking the Fleury first line, the Germans retaking it, the French capturing the line once again after a renewed offensive, and the Germans utilizing artillery support to weaken the French positions before taking back their trenches with heavy losses. The French attack petered out after 25 minutes, by which time 841 French soldiers and 1,024 German soldiers had been killed without territorial gain for either side.
