The Battle of Bremen (13-26 April 1945) occurred when Lashmer Whistler's British 3rd Infantry Division launched an assault on the German city of Bremen during the Allied invasion of Germany at the end of World War II. The British VII Corps, commanded by Neil Ritchie, moved across the Dortmund-Ems Canal at Lingen after heavy resistance, and Lashmer Whistler's British 3rd Infantry Division spearheaded the assault. From 13 to 20 April 1945, the British Army troops saw heavy fighting outside of the city, and the British forces entered the ruined city on 26 April 1945. Bremen would be occupied by the Allied Powers until the final surrender of Nazi Germany on 8 May 1945. The battle was the fiercest resistance that was faced by Bernard Montgomry's British forces during the drive towards Hamburg, Kiel, and Denmark.
