The Battle of Awa was a naval battle of the Boshin War that was fought between the Satsuma Domain and the Tokugawa Shogunate on 28 January 1868. The Satsuma Domain prepared to return its troops to Kagoshima aboard two transports, protected by the warship Kasuga in Hyogo harbor, but the shogunal admiral Enomoto Takeaki moved to blockade the withdrawal of the Satsuma ships from the Battle of Toba-Fushimi. In the ensuing battle, the shogunal frigate Kaiyo Maru and the imperial ship Kasuga traded fire before the Kasuga broke off the engagement. While the Kasuga escaped to Kagoshima, the transport ship Shoo ran aground at Yukinoura and was destroyed by her crew. The Awa was one of the few Tokugawa successes of the Boshin War.
