The Battle of Asolfsskali was a battle fought between the rival Norse Viking colonists of Borgarholt and Asolfsskali in Vinland in 870 AD. The two settlements were founded by rival clans, with the Borgarholters worshipping Odin and the Asolfsskalians worshipping Loki; as a result, when Borgarholter settlers colonized Hafr and Kopanes in southern Newfoundland, conflict broke out with the settlers of Asolfsskali. The Borgarholters, led by the heroic warriors Skomlr Granitepuncher, Brand Smokebuilder, Orlyg Torchgorer, and Valgaror Elkboot, and supposedly accompanied by a Valkyrie, attacked Asolfsskali, only to be showered with arrows by their enemies' hillfort. While they succeeded in destroying the hillfort, they soon faced a Fire Giant, who was slain by the Borgarholter heroes, but not before killing several Borgarholter warriors. The Borgarholters pressed their attack until their numbers dwindled and their two ram crews were killed, upon which they began to retreat to Kopanes. None of them made it back alive, dying in a last stand just outside their base. The Asolfsskalian attackers proceeded to burn the temple to Odin at Kopanes before the last of them were killed by arrows fired by the guardians of the buildings at Kopanes, with their leader Njall Mansequel being among the dead. However, the destruction of the temple to Odin and their defeat at Asolfsskali convinced the Borgarholters to abandon their hopes of colonizing Vinland, withdrawing to the island of Borgarholt. There, they eventually found themselves with too limited supplies to sustain a colony, and none of them ultimately made the return journey to Scandinavia, leading to their colonies becoming lost to history.
