The Battle of Altenstadt was fought in 1757 between the armies of France and Hesse-Kassel during the Seven Years' War.
As Victor-Francois de Broglie's French division approached Frankfurt am Main from the northeast, it came across a smaller Hessian brigade. The French regiments arrayed themselves in an incomplete square shape so that the Hesssian infantry would be shot at from three sides; the French cavalry chased off the Hessian cavalry to deprive the infantry of their protection. Ultimately, the Hessian brigade was destroyed at light cost to the French.
