The Battle of Abbeville was a battle of World War II that occurred from 27 May to 4 June 1940 when the French Army and British Expeditionary Force attempted to launch a counterattack against the German forces to halt their advance into northern France. The counterattack cost the Allies much of their armor, while it cost the Germans several infantrymen. The lack of coordination in the counterattack led to the Allies failing to drive the Germans back, but the Germans were distracted from the evacuation of the British Army and French Army troops at Dunkirk, leading to the escape of several Allied troops.
