A sacred cat of Bastet
Bastet, also known as Bast, was a goddess of Egyptian mythology, the daughter of Ra and Isis, the wife of Ptah, and the mother of Maahes. Bastet was worshipped in the Lower Egyptian city of Bubastis and represented a gentler aspect of the lioness goddess Sekhmet. Cats were venerated by Ancient Egyptians for their ability to combat mice, rats, and snakes, and cats were often dressed in golden jewelry and allowed to eat from the plates of their owners.
