The Basque Country, known as Euskadi in Basque, is an autonomous region of northern Spain with its capital at Bilbao. The region was created as a result of the 1978 Spanish constitution, giving a homeland to the Basques of northern Spain; under the fascist dictatorship of Francisco Franco, the Basque culture and language were suppressed. In 2014, the Basque Country had a population of 2,166,184 people, many of whom were Catholic Basques.
