
Basilan is an island that is a part of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, Philippines. It is the northernmost island of the Sulu archipelago in the southern Philippines, and it is located just off the Zamboanga Peninsula. Basilan is home to the Yakans, Tausugs, and Zamboanguenos, and it has one of the most equitable distributions of wealth in the country, with the rich-poor gap being one of the thinnest in the islands. 65% of the island is Muslim and 33% Christian, with 2% being animist or other beliefs.
