Led by Don Emilio Barzini, the family was involved in illegal operations ranging from drugs to weapons, and its influence reached areas far from New York, including Las Vegas. The family established itself as the most powerful of the Five Families during the 1930s, and it went to war with the Corleone crime family over the drug trade in 1946. The Five Families War would see the Barzini family lose its strength, as its leadership was eliminated and its rackets seized by the Corleones. By 1955, the Barzinis were leaderless and bankrupt, and they were forced to become vassals of the Corleone family.
