Barthelemy Catherine Joubert

Barthelemy Catherine Joubert (14 April 1769 – 15 August 1799) was a general of the First French Republic. He fought in the Italian Campaign of the French Revolutionary Wars and was killed at the Battle of Novi.

Biography[]

Joubert was an enlisted officer in the artillery in 1784 and was made a Brigadier General in 1795 after fighting in Italy during the French Revolutionary Wars. He fought under Andre Massena at the Battle of Lodi in the Italian Campaign (during which he commanded armies during the invasion of Venice and the Siege of Ancona) and fought in the Rhineland in 1799. A confident general and steady under fire, Joubert was respected by Napoleon Bonaparte and given increased responsibilities due to his ability. He fought against the Russians at the Battle of Novi in 1799 and was amongst the first to fall, shot through the heart. The battle was a victory for Alexander Suvorov's Russian army, and at the Pont de Vaux stands a memorial for the fallen general.
