Bart Mancuso was a US Navy Commander who served as commanding officer of the submarine USS Dallas (SSN-700) during the Cold War. In 1984, his submarine detected the Soviet submarine Red October approaching the East Coast, but he worked with CIA agent Jack Ryan to resolve the ensuing Red October crisis by rescuing the defecting Captain Marko Ramius and protecting him from the Soviet submarine V.K. Konovalov, which accidentally destroyed itself with its own missile.
