Barry Haydu (29 January 1948–September 2002) was a Clifton, New Jersey Detective-Lieutenant who was alleged to be responsible for the murder of DiMeo crime family caporegime Dickie Moltisanti.
Biography[]
Barry Haydu was born in Clifton, New Jersey, and he worked for the police department there for thirty years. He became a heavy gambler with serious debts back from when he was a rookie cop, and he became a contract killer to stave off his debts. After Dickie Moltisanti gouged out Jilly Ruffalo's eye in a prison fight, Ruffalo hired Haydu to murder Moltisanti, and he killed Moltisanti as he carried TV trays to his home; he was then assigned to "investigate" his death. The DiMeo crime family kept him around because he was useful to them, but his 2002 retirement meant that his usefulness had come to an end. Dickie's son Christopher Moltisanti broke into his home and waited for him to return from his retirement party, and he knocked him out before handcuffing him to a staircase so that he could question him. Haydu denied any involvement in Dickie's death, but Christopher had never told him that his father was killed; this implied that Haydu had knowledge of the murder. Haydu pled for his life, but Moltisanti told him that even if he had not killed his father, Tony Soprano still wanted him dead. Moltisanti then turned up the volume of Magnum P.I. on the television and shot Haydu twice with his pistol before placing the gun in his hand, making it look like a suicide.
