Barons' Alliance

The Barons' Alliance was a confederation of lords who were opposed to the rule of King Henry III of England, rising up in the Second Barons' War of 1263. Headed by Simon V de Montfort, they controlled Chester and Shrewsbury. The coalition initially won the Battle of Lewes, capturing Prince Edward of Wales. However, de Montfort was killed in the Battle of Evesham in 1265 by the English, who crushed the revolt.

History[]

The Barons' Alliance was formed in 1263 by Lord Simon V de Montfort, who led a coalition to challenge the rule of King Henry III of England, whose tyrannical rule upset many people and caused revolts in Ireland and Wales. De Montfort, Thomas Terrett, and Walter the Honest were the three principal leaders; De Montfort defeated the English king at the Battle of Lewes but in 1265 he was killed in the Battle of Evesham by the army of Prince Edward of Wales. The result of the battle was major, with the alliance falling apart. In 1271 the Chester stronghold of Terrett fell to the English army and Walter the Honest and Simon VII de Montfort were holed up in Shrewsbury.

Army[]

The Baron's Alliance could boast strong heavy infantry, but fielded a poor variety of cavalry.
