Barnet High Street

Barnet High Street is a major street in Chipping Barnet, London Borough of Barnet, England. Located 427 feet above sea level on the high ground between London and York, road maintenance was a frequent problem during the Middle Ages; by 1413; transportation was hindered by dung, dung heaps, pigs, pigsties, timber trunks, and garbage which blocked Barnet High Street. By 1889, Barnet High Street was nicknamed "The Squeeze". During the early 20th century, several redundant inns were demolished, and, during the 1950s, the A1000 helped to better carry traffic along.
