The Barisan Revolusi Nasional (BRN) was an Islamist and Patani separatist party in northern Malaysia and southern Thailand, founded on 13 March 1963. The party advocated Patani secession from Thailand to create an independent Islamic state in the Muslim-majority region, and it began a violent insurgency in 2004, leading to the deaths of around 6,000 people. The BRN has adopted increasingly radical Islamist views as the insurgency progressed, allying with Malaysian jihadist groups during its insurgency.
