Baraceira was a Portuguese colony in Maranhao, Brazil which was founded in 1642 by the explorer Edmundo Cabral. Baraceira developed near two silver mines, and it grew in size as Portuguese colonists arrived to build more houses, a farm, and watchtowers. Located on the north bank of the Pindare River, the colony expanded with the construction of Porto Pindaré, and it survived occasional Dutch raids. In 1645, the Portuguese garrison from Baraceira destroyed the Dutch colony of Lauerstad on the southern back of the Pindaré, pacifying the region.
