Chapel Royal

The Banqueting House is a 17th-century banqueting house located on Whitehall in the City of Westminster, London. The Banqueting House was built by Inigo Jones from 1619 to 1622 as part of the Palace of Whitehall, the residence of English monarchs from 1530 to 1698. Charles I of England was beheaded on a scaffold in front of the Banqueting House in January 1649 during the English Civil War. In January 1698, the Tudor palace was razed by a 17-hour fire, leaving only the Banqueting House, Whitehall Gate, and Holbein Gate. The Banqueting House was converted into a chapel to replace the Chapel Royal of Whitehall, and it remained a chapel before being given to the Royal United Services Institute by Queen Victoria in 1893. The building is now a national monument open to the public as an event venue, and it is cared for by Historic Royal Palaces.
