Balkrishna Indukuri

Balkrishna Indukuri (1669-1728) was a general of the Maratha Confederacy.

Biography[]

Indukuri was born to a Hindu family in Arcut, Carnatica, one of the Maratha kingdoms. In 1700, he was made a general of the Maratha Confederacy and was responsible for the capture of Hyderabad that year and the defeat of Zulfikar Khan at the Battle of Siddapur just south of the city. In winter 1702, Indukuri's armies captured the predominantly-Hindu region of Berar and in the summer of 1704, Indukuri invaded along the eastern coastline of northern India, capturing the lush rice paddies at Kendrapura Wetlands and Balangir Wetlands with the assault on Cuttack, capital of Orissa & Circars. In winter 1709 Indukuri captured Calcutta and died in the city in 1728, dying at the age of 59.
