Baldwin V of Flanders

Baldwin V of Flanders (1012-1 September 1067) was Count of Flanders from 1035 to 1067, succeeding Baldwin IV and preceding Baldwin VI.

Biography[]

Baldwin was born in Arras, Flanders in 1012, the son of Count Baldwin IV of Flanders. He married a daughter of King Robert II of France, and he fathered Baldwin VI, Matilda, and Robert I. From 1046 to 1056, he allied with Duke Godfrey the Bearded of Lorraine against the Holy Roman Emperor Henry III, and he also hosted the exiled Emma of Normandy at Bruges and had his half-sister marry Tostig Godwinson. From 1060 to 1067, he was regent of France for his nephew Philip I, and he died in 1067.
