Baldwin I of Flanders

Baldwin I "Iron Arm" of Flanders (837-879) was Margrave of Flanders from 862 to 879, preceding Baldwin II.

Biography[]

Baldwin was born in 837, and he married King Charles the Bald of West Francia's daughter Judith of Flanders after she eloped with him. Baldwin allied with Rorik Hemmingsson and sent men to capture Baldwin, and the couple was excommunicated by Charles' bishops. The couple then went to Rome to plead with Pope Nicholas I, and they married with papal permission on 13 December 862. Baldwin then became Count of Flanders, and he died in 879.
