Balash (440-488) was Shahanshah of the Sassanid Empire from 484 to 488, succeeding Peroz I and preceding Kavadh I.
Biography[]
Balash was born in 440, the son of Yazdegerd II and the brother of Hormizd III and Peroz I. Balash was elected as the new Shahanshah of the Sassanid Empire in 484 by the White Huns after his brother Peroz was killed in the Battle of Herat, and he had to fight against Armenia. Vahan Mamikonian led an uprising that liberated Armenia from Persian rule, and Balash chose to not send another army to put it down, instead agreeing to peace. In 488, Balash faced an uprising from his nephew Kavadh I, who overthrew him and killed him.
