Bakshi Banu Begum

Bakshi Banu Begum (September 1540 – 1596) was a Mughal princess, the second daughter of Emperor Humayun, and the older half-sister of Emperor Akbar.

Biography[]

Bakshi Banu Begum was born in Delhi in 1540, the daughter of Humayun and Bibi Gunwar. In 1543, she was captured by Humayun's half-brother Askari Mirza during his rebellion, and she and her brother Akbar were sent off to Kabul in 1545. In 1550, Bakshi Banu was betrothed to the son of the Governor of Badakhshan, and she was married to Ibrahim Mirza from 1550 until his death in 1560. That same year, she was married off to the Viceroy of Mewat, Sharifuddin Hussain, who rebelled against his brother-in-law in 1562-1564 before being arrested, spared, and stripped of his titles. Bakshi Banu remained married to Sharifuddin until his death in 1581, and she died in 1596.
